What the characters from "Gilmore Girls" would be listening to this fall, pt. 1
Gilmore Girls fall has begun.
In honour of the start of Gilmore Girls fall, iβve decided to share my thoughts on what each character would be listening to as the start of fall begins. Iβm not taking into account the time difference between when the show takes place and now, so just deal with it. Let us begin.
Tristin Dugray: To open off our list we have Tristin, who wasnβt around for that long in the grand scheme of things, but I still imagine that he would have a pretty funny Spotify listening history for some reason. I think in public, around the boys, and if heβs cruising on his way to Chilton, heβs definitely bumping For All The Dogs by the BBL lord himself, Drake. Something relatively new and trendy, but not like TikTok flash in the pan kind of new. Something with zero quality and substance (sorry Drizzy) that he can just throw on and not worry about the publics perception of him. BUT, when heβs alone, I think he for sure has got Beauty Behind the Madness on by The Weeknd. Something a little more classic, showcasing his sad boi roots, and just how down bad he is. In his mind, he thinks heβs batman. Rich, charismatic, playboy on the outside, but on the inside, heβs lonely, tortured, and no one gets him. He prefers the darker, moodier, more ambient sonics and textures of early Weeknd, which fully allow him to embrace his main character energy, or his acceptance that heβs been the villain all along. Either way, his city needs him. Someone turn on the bat signal.
Dean Forester: I guess Iβll start with Roryβs love interests then move on. Next we have Dean, who plays a much larger and more significant role throughout the show. Now I love Jared Padalecki (Deanβs actor) for his portrayal of Sam Winchester in the absolute gem of a show Supernatural. However, his character as Dean is quite annoying and strange and toxically masculine and just overall stupid. Not a fan. For some reason he gives me like, popular in high school but always had a hint of country in him? And then, after he graduates he like slowly leans more and more into that country side of him as time goes on. Maybe thatβs just me, but thatβs sort of the vibe I get. And I think thatβs reflected in the show somewhat with his strange character arc. Anyways, I think Deanβs got that strange mix of sweet, high school heartthrob, and slightly right-wing, conservative, farm boy. Therefore, I think Dean is spinning Stoney by Post Malone. An oldie, but with some bangers. Dean knows what he wants (or at least he thinks he does). He isnβt super interested in more current music or trends. He discovered Post Malone, and was intrigued by his country music connection. But then, was blown away by his ability to dominate the hip hop world with his release of Stoney in 2016. You already know he was spinning Congratulations during his high school hockey game warmups. Fast forward, and heβs STILL spinning Congratulations in 2024. Classic Dean.
Jess Mariano: Mr. Mariano himself. Arguably one of the most interesting character arcs of the entire show. I absolutely hated him when he showed up. But, by the end of watching the entire show, he was one of my favourite characters, maybe even my favourite character. Because I think Jess evolved into such a different person over the course of him appearing on the show, Iβm going to share what I think Jess would be listening to right when he arrives to Stars Hollow, and what he would be listening to while heβs working in that publishing house in Philadelphia some years later. We will call that βNew York Jessβ.
I think younger Stars Hollow Jess has quite an affinity to heavier music, which is showcased throughout the show quite a bit if I can recall correctly. He expresses his admiration for bands like Metallica and Tool, but also seems to have quite a good recognition of the classics. Because he was a wealth of knowledge, I assume he probably has one of the most diverse playlists out of anyone in the show. But because of teenage Jessβ anger and angst, I still see him associating himself with heavier music, or something that puts him more on the fringe of society. Heβs different than other boys. I also see him like religiously surfing band camp for new obscure bands to listen to (@ANIL RAMGOTRAAA) just because he loves music, and the culture associated with it. With all that said though, in my opinion even though you could probably take this in multiple different directions, I think teenage Jess is spinning CRAWLER by IDLES released in 2021. I think this album contains all the diverse parts of what make Jess such a unique and layered character. There are some slower more intimate parts of the album, some grittier, more avant-garde parts, and some aggressive parts. But overall I think the heavier punk aesthetic and guttural, raw energy that IDLES is known for bringing in their music, would make this a staple back to school/beginning of fall listen for Jess. And I canβt blame him. This album is incredible.
Now, βNew York Jessβ, who has matured a little bit, grown a little wiser, learned from his mistakes, and found a more stable and successful path for himself I think is spinning something a tad different, but something that still carries a familiar soul and feel as the IDLES album. To me, something in a similar vein to this album, but with a slightly more relaxed, laid back essence to it would be the self titled release from Better Oblivion Community Center. The music of super duo Phoebe Bridgers and Conner Oberst I think carry that same core aesthetic as the music from IDLES, but with a slightly mellower and haunting tone. Something more reflective of where I believe Jess would be at in his life. Perhaps he has had more time to think about events and decisions he made during his teenage years. Do some of his choices haunt him? Is he content with where he is right now? Either way, I think this album from Phoebe and Conner would be the perfect backdrop for Jessβ contemplative, perhaps retrospective. slow drive to work on a chilly fall morning.
Stay tuned for part 2 which will be coming next week, Monday! We love a good cliff hanger mwahaha. Until then, I hope everyone enjoys the start of their Gilmore Girls βla la laβ fallβ¦
