What the characters from Gilmore Girls would be listening to this fall, pt. 3 - THE CONCLUSION
they not like us, on repeat.
Apologies to all 18 subscribers who were expecting my post this past Monday, but did not receive it :( I was simply burnt the f*ck out. I told Anil that I needed to take a break this past week since me and Syd were busy with apartment repairs. But now, Iβm back, and better than ever (cap) so letβs get down to business. I present to you, the final instalment of my Gilmore Girls series!!
Lane Kim: So I think just in general, justice for my girl Lane. They did her SO dirty on that show, by having her marry Zach. Dude is disgusting. Lane had such an interesting arc and I thought she was one of the more interesting characters on the show, but her ending was awful. Botched in literally every way. But also, the Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life thing that they did , kind of did everyone dirty. Wasnβt a great way to end such a powerful series in my opinion. But, I digress.
One of my favourite things about Laneβs character was her obsession with music. Specifically, slightly obscure βmusiciansβ music. The stuff only other musicians would ever think to listen to. Actually while watching the show, I often thought that if there was anyone that me and Anil would enjoy hanging out with in real life, it would probably be her. It would take approximately 12 minutes before Anil and Lane would start talking about some obscure noise rock band with 5 followers on instagram, that they both found on Bandcamp. For this reason, I think there are so many different directions you could go with choosing what Lane would be listening to. Out of all the characters on the show, you could honestly probably pick anything for her and could successfully convince me that she would have a place for whatever it is you think sheβs listening to, on her Spotify playlists. So, after a bit of thinking I decided to go with this; Two Drink Minimum by Wayne Krantz. This album is slightly obscure, live, and filled with astonishing musicianship. On this album, jazz/fusion guitar player Wayne Krantz accompanied by drummer Zach Danziger and bassist Lincoln Goines decide that they are taking a total of zero prisoners. Captured live at the iconic 55 bar in New York, the album has a very raw, aggressive and ferocity to it that I think would heavily appeal to Laneβs musical brain, the same way it appealed to mine the first time I heard the project. Of course Lane being a drummer, I just assume she would be in awe of Zachβs playing on this album. Sometimes I donβt think Danziger gets enough respect for his contributions to drumming. He is an incredible player who has made some huge contributions and innovations to improvised drumming and music. And if you need to take more than just my word for it, play. this. record.
Lorelai Gilmore: So with Lorelai, I think that she is listening to something a little classic, classy, and timeless. Some sort of rock band that has a bit of a cleaner, and polished sound about them. But still a band that encapsulates the sound of classic rock and roll. But above all else, I think Lorelei is listening to good f*cking songs. And I donβt mean like popular songs, I mean like extremely well written songs. Songs that no matter how much time passes after they have been released, will always be considered masterpieces. I can think of a couple different bands that would fit within these parameters. But I think there is one band that for some reason to me, just encapsulates the essence of Gilmore Girls a little better than any other. And that band is Fleetwood Mac. Therefore, I think Lorelai is spinning Rumours (Super Deluxe Edition). I can easily see Lorelei listening to this album to accompany the various highs and lows that she experiences throughout the show. Fleetwood Mac mastered the art of songwriting, and I think that is a feat that Lorelei would not let go unrecognized. Now, I also think Lorelei would be playing the Super Deluxe version of the album specifically, because at some point, she would just want to hear the hits lol. Which, is honestly so fair. Sometimes, all you need are the certified bangers.
Rory Gilmore: Oh Rory. How I despise you. I really am not a big Rory Gilmore fan. And I could give one million reasons why. I just really donβt like her character development, the amount of special treatment she gets, and her attitude towards lots of different things. I donβt know maybe as I get older, my opinions on her character will change, but as of this moment, not a fan. That being said, I think she would have a pretty cool Spotify library. Being friends with Lane would obviously introduce her to a ton of interesting, not super well known bands and artists. Pair that with Lorelaiβs impeccable music taste, you get quite a recipe for success. I do have to credit Syd with helping me choose for Rory though in all honesty. Had to consult the expert for the big finale yanno?
Our criteria for judging what Rory would listen to, was: βNot like other girlsβ, βIndieβ, βPunk-ishβ and βGirlbossβ. After some research and debate fuelled by alcoholic cider, we ended up deciding that this fall, Rory Gilmore would be listening to: Further Joy by The Regrettes. Unfortunately the band has disbanded, but the relatively small amount of music they released during their lifespan is incredibly catchy, and quality. I think this band encapsulates all of our judging criteria very well, and I could easily see a context with Rory listening to this in every season of the show, and every stage of her character development. This is a great album that has a little bit of everything. Great songwriting, catchy melodies, infectious grooves, haunting vocals, and a classic indie/punk feel good essence, that makes it a high quality, accessible and enjoyable listen.
If you made it this far, I hope you enjoyed my mini-series. Hopefully you have some new music to check out, and if you somehow knew all those albums, go buy yourself a treat or something idfk. Now, itβs time for me to end this post, cause me and Syd need to go watch Attack on Titan, so, buh bye!
